FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a tutoring session look like?

Students should have all of their math resources (textbook, notes, homework, calculator (if needed), a pencil, and graph paper if appropriate).  Learning is best done by doing.  The most productive sessions are when students come knowing what they need to work on; they’ve attempted the homework and come with problems they’re stuck on or concepts they didn’t understand when they went over it in class.  I typically start with having students explain how they understand the concept.  This helps reinforce students current understanding as they’re encouraged to communicate about math and it also allows me to look for gaps in understanding or misunderstandings.  After questions are addressed, we can look ahead to what concepts students will be looking at within the coming week and get a head start on it.  The more times students see a concept, the more comfortable they will be (gaining confidence) and the more likely they’ll be to remember it.  Finally, math comes by doing.  During tutoring sessions, we will work through many problems ranging from easy to hard in an effort to get students writing mathematically and talking mathematically.

How does online tutoring work?

We will use Google Meet to connect via video. I use a drawing tablet attached to my computer and will share my screen.  If students have worksheets or problems from a textbook that have been assigned, they/you can snap a picture(s) or send the pdf/document to me via email (davidtutorsmath@gmail.com) and I can upload it into my digital notebook.  This allows the session to move more quickly because the student doesn’t have to read problems to me.

Me sharing my screen simulates the same experience that would happen around your kitchen table. I encourage students to talk out loud as they write on a piece of paper in front of them, I copy what they’re saying on the screen as they write. In my experience, having students talk through the concepts, it reinforces the vocabulary that they need to practice.

Do I need to download any software?
No. Google Meet web-based and will work in any browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.), though Chrome works the best.

What tech do I need for a session?
A computer, laptop, or tablet with a microphone and camera (most laptops and tablets come with these built-in now). The camera is not needed, but helps tremendously for nonverbal cues when students aren’t understanding something.

How do I pay for the session?
I take credit card payments through my scheduling app: 10to8.  Click here to schedule an appointment

Good learning environment

David is an excellent Math tutor. Our daughter had him as a tutor while she was attending International Academy and in Higher Math. His relationship with the students was relaxed and they felt comfortable with him and trusted him which is very important for a good learning environment. Needless to say, her grades improved and she was exempt from taking further Math classes at University of Michigan for her undergraduate. I can fully recommend him for Math tutoring!

Made learning fun

Excellent tutor. I highly recommend. David tutored my sons in preparation for the International Academy in Bloomfield. Both benefited tremendously from their time with David. Surprisingly, one went on to minor in math. Initially, this was not a favorite subject. I credit David for giving my sons the confidence and tools they needed to be successful students. He made learning fun for them.

Explains in different ways to ensure understanding

We have a sophomore (in MYP on track for the IB curriculum next year) and a senior (currently preparing for IB exams in May). Our senior has been working with David as needed for over a year and our sophomore began working with David several months ago. They both agree that David is an excellent teacher and is able to explain the material in different ways to ensure they understand it. David is very knowledgeable in all math concepts and clearly explains the material. Due to time constraints, occasionally David works with both of students at the same time and is excellent at giving both students the attention needed. I highly recommend David as a math tutor --- he has truly helped both of our students through concepts that were challenging for them.

Patience, empathy, and positive support

We hired David to tutor our son Sam shortly after he began the IB program at International Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Sam was really struggling and was barely getting D-'s on his tests. David was quickly able to identify the various (many!!) issues Sam was having. With patience, empathy, positive support and amazing teaching skills David's impact was obvious and immediate. David provided Sam with many tools to cope with his issues, as well as math skills to compliment what he was learning at IA. Sam's marks steadily improved along with his confidence. David continued to work with Sam for all four of his high school years, and when Sam graduated from IA (one of the top high schools in the US and in the very challenging IB program) he had a B+ in math. Happy to report that Sam will soon graduate from the University of Edinburgh (International Relations and Law) and this would not have been possible without David Brazle.

Helped math become strength

Mr. Brazle was the BEST math tutor I ever had the pleasure of working with. I was not able to grasp certain concepts my teachers taught because of their fast pace but Mr. Brazle took the time to work me through all of it. The way he explained broke down the concepts made them so easy to understand and Math became my strong point throughout high school. I went to an IB school and I ended up getting a 6 on my IB math exam. I strongly recommend working with Mr. Brazle if you struggle in math because he is the best tutor out there!
